Seismology and Infrasound

£26,600 - £45,580 dependent on experience

AWE has two positions for numerate Geophysicists/Physicists based at its Blacknest Seismology Centre to conduct Seismology/Infrasound research. The successful applicants will work as part of a team that provides technical advice and expertise to the UK Government on both the verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty and novel applications of the data and analysis techniques, including applications of seismo-acoustic technologies supporting National Nuclear Security.

Candidates with a strong computational background are preferred, ideally with a PhD and research experience.

Key accountabilities

  • Provide advice / expertise and communicate research results to AWE colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Assist in the delivery of the Forensic Seismology programme, and the wider NNS programme
  • Participate in maintaining scientific collaborations between AWE, UK academia and overseas counterparts

Responsibilities

  • Provide geophysical and waveform expertise to enhance the analysis of recorded events
  • Participate in research and development of seismology, hydro-acoustic and infrasound expertise
  • Provide guidance and assistance where appropriate to other staff to achieve agreed targets, and provide advice drawing on areas of specific expertise and experience
  • Participate in maintaining scientific collaborations between AWE, UK academia and overseas counterparts
  • Publish results in peer reviewed journals and other media when possible
  • Apply these skills as tasked, taking into account the quality, safety and security requirements of AWE

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate would have a PhD in geophysics, physics or geology with research experience, and preferably a strong computational background

Knowledge

  • A good working knowledge of a waveform technology is required, preferably in infrasound, hydroacoustics or seismology
  • Computing knowledge is required
  • A strong computational background is preferred
  • Knowledge of the workings of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty would be advantageous

Experience

  • Self-directed, and directed, research in one or more waveform technologies (seismic, infrasound, hydro-acoustics), or the dynamics of explosion sources within geological media and the atmosphere is required
  • Computing experience is required
  • Experience of working with the CTBTO is of particular interest
  • Experience of working in a technical/research project team is desirable, as is experience of international collaborative work

  • Scientific analysis, report writing and good communications
  • Ability to work well with others, and to work independently
  • Ability to keep abreast of developments in relevant technologies
  • Must have computer skills, including some programming
